Mariah Carey’s greatest hits

Star of the upcoming “A Star Is Born” film, Mariah Carey — also known by her more recognizable voice — has spent the past 20 years dazzling audiences worldwide with hits from her very first album, “Vision of Love.”

Inspired by Carey’s experiences during her childhood growing up in a working-class family in New York City, “Vision of Love” was released in 1994, marking a watershed moment in the music industry.

In the album’s original promotional video, Carey lights up a glittering disco ball as she croons her first hit, “Vision of Love.” Her self-assured demeanor and signature style immediately set her apart from other pop stars.

Well before becoming a pop sensation, Carey was already renowned for her vocal talents. After studying classical piano at the age of four, she belted out songs at local night clubs and youth centers in New York City. She didn’t specialize in a particular style, but her passion quickly transferred over to singing jazz standards, blues and gospel songs.

Following this short stint at Juilliard, Carey started to focus more and more on singing and even adopted a stage name — Mariah, which is a combination of her first and middle names.

Influenced by a strong woman, Carey also sought to identify with the rebellious spirit of the movie “Risky Business” and aspired to convey that same type of vibe to the world.

Here, we’re taking a look back at some of her most memorable numbers.
